Turkmenistan is consistently implementing large-scale projects aimed at strengthening its position within the international transport and transit system and enhancing efficient connections with the world's leading economic centers. The development of modern transport infrastructure and the expansion of international transport corridors remain among the country's key state priorities.
At present, two major international transport corridors pass through the territory of Turkmenistan. The East–West corridor serves as a vital transport link connecting China, the countries of Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe. Meanwhile, the North–South corridor provides efficient access to the Persian Gulf states, South Asia, and global markets.
The country continues to implement major projects to develop and modernize its road, railway, air, and maritime transport infrastructure. A special role in this process belongs to the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. Located on the Caspian Sea coast, this modern transport and logistics hub makes a significant contribution to expanding trade across Eurasia and improving the efficiency of international freight transportation.
The Turkmenbashi International Seaport maintains regular links with the ports of other Caspian littoral states, serving as an important hub that integrates the region's transport networks. It is not only a modern infrastructure facility but also one of the strategic centers supporting the implementation of Turkmenistan's international transport initiatives.
Turkmenistan is also actively working to increase the speed and reliability of cargo transportation by rail and air. These efforts further strengthen the country's role in international transport corridors while creating new transit opportunities.
The development of the national road network remains another strategic priority. One of the country's landmark infrastructure projects is the 600-kilometer Ashgabat–Turkmenabat high-speed highway, which has significantly increased the capacity of the national transport system and established a modern, high-performance transport corridor.
Another important project is the construction of the 252-kilometer Turkmenbashi–Garabogaz–Kazakhstan border highway. This route represents a key stage in developing the North–South transport corridor. The new highway is expected to create an additional sustainable Eurasian transport route, increase transit traffic, and promote broader regional economic cooperation.
The modernization of border customs checkpoints is also making a positive contribution to expanding the country's transport and transit potential. The introduction of modern technologies has accelerated and simplified cargo clearance procedures.
The implementation of digital systems ensures that customs operations are carried out in accordance with international standards. These efforts further reinforce Turkmenistan's position as a reliable partner in the global transport system.
